Beverly McClatchy loves Halloween. She  started decorating when her son was young, helping with school carnivals. Her love of decorating spilled into her home and she began collecting Halloween and decorating from the front porch to the half bath and every room in-between. Now her passion is sharing with her granddaughter and creating traditions and memories with her. Listen in to the podcast as Beverly discusses with the Christmas Decorating Experts how she starts weeks in advance and carries the theme throughout the house, more fun than frightening!

Open or close doors….Ist Impressions

I st impressions matter!

Will Your 1st Impression, Open or Close Doors?

You never get a second Chance to make a 1st Impression!

You CANNOT, NOT make a first impression.

People always form an initial impression about us, our homes, our offices, our businesses the 1st time they come in contact with us, in person, over the telephone or at our front door.

The experts differ on the number of seconds it takes to create a 1st impression, but between 7-17 !

Vision leads the pack of our senses used to make a first impression, smell is second.

Cleaning, sweeping, fresh paint, clean glass, cobwebs, etc (don’t miss up high)

Glitter, a girls got to have some!

The fun pink flower spray was leftover from Christmas! After Christmas sales are a great place to find fun things to incorporate in seasonal and everyday decorating. The purpose of a theme and color story is to help you focus when you are looking for supplies for your project and narrow the options! We also love items that can be used for more than one purpose!

The Lisa Frost heart @demdaco(the inspiration) and the fun Sandra Magsamen Sign @livingartfully @walmart, are 2 of the focal points

We wired on the canvas heart and the sign, now to balance the two we will add our bow! Learn how to tie a bow at http://www.bowapp.showmedecorating.com just $.99! The power of 3! Wired ribbon is best! @reliantribbon

The power of 3, adds balance to the wreath!, bow is wired on!

Dressed up lamp for Valentines day!

Love is in the air… at my house! One of my favorite days to decorate for, Valentines. In the entry way I dress up the lamp with a sheer wired ribbon wrapped around the shade and tie on the puffy heart tassel. (last year this heart was hanging from a shelf in the guest room!) I love to use items differently each year. I also arranged my heart printed bowl, cute heart boxes and antique valentines sprinkled in! This create a fun vignette to welcome my guest.

I love antique valentines, I also keep special ones the kids have made, and sprinkle them through out my decorating!

So in keeping with the Show Me Decorating steps :

Step 1.  pick a Theme or Celebration, Valentines day

Step 2. Color story, Red, pink and black

Step 3. Gather items that coordinate and support the theme and color story. Valentines, hearts, ribbon, serving pieces, heart boxes

Hint: I have big clear tubs, marked for the season or celebration, ie: Valentines, Easter/spring, Patriotic/4th of July, Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and of course Christmas!!!! (lots of tubs for Christmas!) Some of my items do double and triple duty!

Check out our app, www.app.showmedecorating.com just $2.99

Now back to Valentines, so the chandeliers were jealous of the lamp being dressed so now it was their turn.

Before, waiting for decorations!

Cut lengths of ribbon and inexpensive paper hearts (@hobbylobby)

Yes, I do really decorate!

Bright red ribbon and hearts!

Now the Big Chandelier gets dressed!

The before, waiting to be dressed for the party!

I gathered up all my goodies, glitter hearts, glass hearts, big plastic hearts and ribbon

Big red hearts are added, tied with red sheer ribbon, hanging from the middle is a cut out paper glittered heart from @Michael's

Old World Christmas has the cutest conversation hearts, they are so cute hanging from sequined wire(also from Christmas)

What would life be with out Glitter! Thanks @hobbylobby for great selections and prices!

Use sheer red ribbon to tie on glittered hearts to chandelier arms!

Shiny, glitter, glass and sparkle!

This Chandelier hangs over my table for the party and will be the main centerpiece.

All lit up and ready for a party

The Lisa Frost (@demdaco)puffy heart was the inspiration for my color story, and I will show you next how it was used in my doorway wreath……..

The piano top was chosen to display the Valentine decorations.

Happy Valentines Day! It’s one of my favorite holidays to decorate and celebrate. Maybe it’s because my birthday is February 12, and my husband has to double up on gifts, or the main color is red and it is my favorite! No matter what the reason a house decorated is a happy home. I love to use the top of our piano because everyone coming in my front door can see it. (hint, pick a spot to change out seasonally that is very visible and the whole house appears decorated, great for busy families)

Show Me Some Flip Flops & Flamingos!

What says Summertime better than Flip Flops ? (or thongs like we used to call them! Ha!)

I was ready to change to an all out Summer Time wreath. So while perusing the isles @hobbylobbystore, I spied flip flops in every color and they were on sale!

Flip Flop sale!

So I chose pairs in different sizes and colors for interest and variety. Next I purchased a plain grapevine ($5.99 a great inexpensive base) and decided to spray paint it a bright green. (This color would pop off my dark brown door)

Grapevine and spray paint

Tip: When spray painting objects it is best outdoors, and using an empty box allows the paint to have better coverage.

We like to use indoor/outdoor spray paint

Tip: A gloss fast drying spray paint works great!

Now gather all your materials

What goes better with Flip Flops than Flamingoes? Flamingos were purchased from Wally’s Party Store for about $15. When making a wreath I like to have variety of colors, patterns and sizes. I also have my stash of ribbon in a clear tub marked ‘Ribbon’ for easy access.

Tip to Recycle:

I recycle or reuse all those little or big pieces of ribbon, bows and trim from packages, gift bags etc. This is a great project to use up all those saved pieces!

Pink Bow is wired to left side of wreath

I tied a bow out of left over Christmas Ribbon from Rebecca’s tree and added a black and white polka dot ribbon tied across the middle.

Tip: If you need to know how to tie a bow you can learn how with our Show Me App for iPhone & iPad!

Get The Show Me Decorating App for iPhone & iPad

Back of flip flop with wire attached

Next I prepped all my flip flop pairs by attaching wire onto the back wrapped around the middle tab. This allowed me to wire the flip flops onto the wreath.

Flamingo with pipe cleaner legs

Brown pipe cleaner hot glued into leg holes.

Pair of flamingos attached

I placed one flamingo in the middle of the wreath and wired on with the pipecleaner legs (this won’t show after ribbon and flip flops are added. The other flamingo was attached with thin wire around the neck and one of the legs under the body.

I like to work with three focal points on wreaths:

One: The bow

Two & Three: The flamingos

The flip flops and ribbon will  be our supporting stars!

More flip flops wired on!

Dress up flip flops with ribbon tied on

Add assorted ribbon pieces tied on to grapevine

The More ribbon the merrier! I added a green bow (still tied from a package) to the neck on the flamingo to hide the wire. I let longer lengths of ribbon hang from the bottom of the wreath. Have fun mixing and matching with the ribbon, loop it through the grapevine and tie.

Summer is Welcome

Show Me some flip flops and flamingos and I will Show You a fun summer time wreath!

Show Me Decorating is here to Create, Inspire, Educate you and you go Decorate! (or entertain)

Show Me Some Birthday Cupcake Cones!

Yummy goodness in a cone! and it is not melting!

Rebecca turned 13 this year! She is officially a teenager! So this called for a fun birthday party which included Pizza, “Big, Better, Best Scavenger Hunt,” Purple Cows, and Cupcake Cones. We are always looking for new ways to serve birthday cake!

We decided not to bake the cupcake batter in the small cones (as many have done) but to use the larger waffle cones and stuff them with layers of cupcakes and frosting.

Steps

We made 1 box each of butter and milk chocolate cake mixes.

We did 2 sizes of cupcakes, miniature and regular. We needed the smaller ones to stuff in the cones first and then top off with the large cupcake, filling with buttercream icing in between. The icing acts as glue to hold it all together! Here is a step by step look at the process (in the pictures!)

The Vanilla and Chocolate cupcakes in 2 sizes.

First stuff a miniature cupcake in waffle cone

Now pipe buttercream frosting on top

Tip: Piping the icing in was the best method, we used disposable bags with the tip cut off.

Add another mini cupcake

We made some all vanilla, all chocolate and some mixed and used the icing colors to differentiate.
Tip: We matched our icing colors to the birthday paper goods for a coordinated look!

Piping on second layer of frosting

Add large cupcake and ice the top to look like an ice cream cone & sprinkles add the finishing touch!

Cupcake cones, drying on a box

Tip: We used a box with a lid and made holes for the cones to stand up in while the icing dries. A shoe box worked great also.

Rebecca taste test one! yum!

Big better best winners!

The winners returned with a Hello Kitty waffle iron, toaster and a Harley Davidson mini collectors grill!

Big Better Best Scavenger Hunt

http://www.perfect-partygames.com/teen-scavenger-hunt.html

We decided our drinks would be the Purple Cows (like we enjoyed from the Shake Shack on our New York trip!) to go with our fun food, vanilla ice cream and grape soda!

Show Me Decorating is always about creating, inspiring, educating and then you decorating (or in this case entertaining) with simple step by step ideas.

We enjoyed our party! My little girl is a teenager!

“Show me” some (almost FREE) Graduation Centerpieces

I can’t believe it has been a year since Will graduated from high school! He has enjoyed a successful year at the University of Texas, Hook’em! When I have been out and about, friends, customers and acquaintances have asked me for ideas on graduation centerpieces. That is why I wanted to share with you what I have done and hope that it will spark some ideas for you and your graduate!

The philosophy behind “Show Me Decorating” is to create (for you), inspire (you), educate (you) and (you) decorate. with that in mind we like to start with a theme or color story. In this case I built my theme around Will and his interest, diving and graduating! It was fun combining the Lee marron with the Texas burnt orange! (almost like oil and water, or Aggies and Longhorns! Ha!) I used an iron boy that we purchased several years ago from Bed Bath and Beyond. He was intended for use in your garden, however we have dressed him and the iron girl, up in wedding attire, baby and birthday decorations for various showers and parties!

Materials

Close up of swimsuit, sammy, pictures

Dressing the iron boy

Gathering all my materials to start decorating

Because Will is a spring-board diver, I chose to dress the boy in an orange swimsuit and Will’s Lee dive suit. I also gathered up pictures of Will at different ages from my stash and the blue beach towel is my table runner! I love to use unconventional items.

Now it’s time to arrange all my stuff. I want to keep in mind that it will be seen from all sides, and to vary the height and size of items for interest.

I love how fresh greenery and flowers brighten a centerpiece. I stepped out into the yard and cut lengths of honeysuckle vine to drape, greenery from my shrubs, orange day lilies and some blooms from my maroon mum. I love it because they were basically free!

Finished centerpiece just waiting for the food.

The UT hat tops it off! It’s time to get the food out and let the party begin. I chose to make my “famous” Hawaiian sandwiches, yum, and Wills favorite cookie bar brownie! Chips and iced down drinks so I get to enjoy all the fun.

So the next time you need a centerpiece for your celebration, chose your theme or color story, look around your house and yard and create your very own unique and almost free centerpiece!
