Show Me Bunko Party, 4th of July Style

Show Me Bunko Party, 4th of July Style

Mom, ready to host her Patriotic Bunko party!

Mom, ready to host her Patriotic Bunko party!

Our mom has always been a great hostess. We grew up with wedding showers, bridesmaid luncheons, graduation parties and a host of celebrations large and small.

She always allowed us to participate and by doing so, we all learned to entertain and love to!

She has a group of friends that take turn hosting their Bunko group. We are so proud that mom hosted this month because she had not done so since she broke her arm, had surgery and survived therapy!

The 1st step to make your entertaining easier is to decide a theme, and because it fell the 1st week of July, a patriotic theme was chosen (plus she had a collection of red, white and blue goodies) So mom gathered up her red, white and blue table cloths, flag squares, patriotic pails (to fill with candy), star centerpiece explosions, and small red, white and blue candles. Card tables were set up for bunko play and her dining table was set to serve buffet style.

Bunko tables are set and ready for fun!

Coordinating Patriotic paper goods mean less clean up!

Tip: Investing in washable table cloths allows for multi-purpose use from party to party.

Next was deciding the menu and a picnic theme came to mind, with fried chicken, potato salad, watermelon and Blueberry Ice Box Pie.

Easy as Pie! for the 4th of July!

Easy as Pie! for the 4th of July!

Tip: To enjoy a party, plan food that is pre made: potato salad, broccoli slaw salad kit and fried chicken. (no hot kitchen or last-minute prepping) Serve food in platters and bowls that coordinate with your theme!

Platters, bowls and serving pieces were gathered up to coordinate with the table-cloth and marked with post it notes of food they were to hold. White bowls, red platters and blue specked tin wear were all put to use.

The centerpiece was created from a drum lunch box (mom’s from a high school fundraiser), a metal picnic basket (which belonged to the original Miss Cayce’s), a basket of faux red tulips and ivy (they resides year round on the kitchen table) and an Abraham Lincoln wooden figurine from my collection.

A metal cross is displayed on the corner of the picnic basket, a nod to the sacrifice of so many for our freedoms!

Tip: When creating a centerpiece, consider shopping your home, bookcases, shelves, cupboards and closets for items that relate to the theme. Use different textures, materials and heights for interest.

Now have fun in displaying the food. Fruit is perfect for summer and what says picnic more that a watermelon. Be creative and scoop out all the melon leaving a bowl you can carve to serve it in.

Honoring the memory of Cooper C McCraney

Cooper Clinton McCraney

Cooper Clinton McCraney

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday which occurs every year on the final Monday of May.[1] Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.[2] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.[

In honor of my father n law, who served during  World War II, I like to decorate the mantel with his picture, flag and certificate for service signed by Richard Nixon. I pull in other Patriotic pieces from my collection to coordinate and compliment the Red, White and Blue theme. It is a great teaching tool with the kids and grandkids. It is an opportunity to reflect on the lives of so many men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice and service to our country.

We are free today because so many have given so much.

The original Pearl larger beer actually belonged to Cooper and my husband has kept the unopened can as a remembrance.

Lady Liberty stands guard and Old Glory is proudly displayed.

So today as you fly your American Flag, say a thank you and remember all those who died for the sake of our freedom!

This week has been a great reminder of what makes America strong- that in the times of destruction we can come together and help those in need. It reminds us that we can pray for those affected by the storms and we can give to those who can offer practical help.

If you would like to help, Samaritan’s Purse http://www.samaritanspurse.org and the Red Cross http://www.redcross.org are wonderful organizations that provide on the ground help to those directly hurt by the storms.

Lets celebrate freedom!

Round Top Collection's Chalkboard jars

Add a touch of the season’s to any room in your house with the Round Top Collection’s Chalkboard jars by changing out magnets to match the season or mood.

A favorite stuffed teddy is all dressed for a parade, and my collection of red, white and blue is all brought out to celebrate America’s birthday!  (or Memorial Day). I have been collecting for years and store it all in accessible clear tubs marked “patriotic”.
A new favorite to add to my collection of seasonal decorating is the Round Top Collection’s Chalkboard jars. This versatile Jar with the change of a magnet or chalkboard message leaps from one celebration to the next!
I love to group complimentary items to make a statement. The metal flag container doubles as a silverware holder for the fun family cookout! Filled with a permanent ivy the green adds life. You could easily substitute a fresh flowering plant or maybe a fresh herb!
Ribbon! The addition of red satin ribbon compliments the red, white and blue theme.

Simply sensational is this sophisticated blend of gold, rust and turquoise.  Pheasant feathers and animal print provide a striking accent.  The bold peacock blue is a welcome contrast to the earthy tones and black trim in this lovely room.  Twin wreaths on the front doors invite guests in to see this spectacular tree that’s proud as a peacock!  The garland on the mantle reflects the trees gorgeous decorations and colors along with the animal print stockings trimmed in black fur.

Show Me Another Grand Baby Nursery!

Better late than never! That’s what happens when a grand baby is born during Christmas season.

I have had such a blessed year by gaining 2 new grand children; Layla Elizabeth in July and Barrett James in October.

My daughter Katy and her husband Ben decided to wait until the due date to find out what they were having.  In today’s time that could cause a lot of people stress when decorating the nursery. However, we enjoyed putting together a fun, colorful, gender neutral nursery.  We are spoiled with access to a fantastic children’s fabric store @Graham Kracker in Midland who carry a wide array of fabulous fabrics, and mae all the custom bedding and curtains.  In Show Me fashion you must first pick your theme/colors.

Check out  www.grahmkracker.com

Katy loved Orange and Turquoise with a mixture of fun prints! Coordinating with the rest of her house she picked stripes and floral prints.  She took the diamond fabric and had @SherwinWilliams match a paint color for the ceiling of the room.  Painting the ceiling a color is a great option when ther is alot of pattern/color in the room. Katy had to use her negotiating skills with Ben, but in the end he agreed and even did the painting!

Next, Katy chose to re-purpose a dresser that belonged to her dad, Jim as a kid. She chose to paint it turquoise.

To dull the old finish and prepare it to paint, a de-glosser or liquid sand is used. This is available at @HomeDepot or @Lowes. With a t-shirt rag wipe over all the surfaces with the de-glosser following the manufactures instructions. Paint the furniture with @delta Ceramcoat acrlylic paint available @HobbyLobby, or @Michaels.

Tip: After desired color is achieved, use a wipe on poly varnish which is easy to apply using a t-shirt rag, follow manufactures instructions. Apply several coats for maximum protection. Matt, semi-gloss and gloss finishes are available.

Katy has a very eclectic taste and enjoyed mixing all the fabric choices and colors to create the perfect bedding and room for the new baby (boy or girl)!

What a fun room! The hand me down dresser sports a fresh coat of paint and the orange lamp adds a pop of color!

Re-using and repurposing an old piece of furniture is fun!

In addition to the crib bedding we also carried over the fabrics to the twin bed.

I hope you enjoy getting a few new ideas for a nursery!

Barrett loves his room and his Granna for helping to make it happen the Show Me Decorating way!

He encourages everyone to get his Granna and Aunt Becky’s App $2.99

Show Me: Food, Fun and Family on the 4th!

July 4th is fast approaching and I still don’t have plans. Not because they’re aren’t any….it’s because we have so many to choose from! All I know is that it ALWAYS involves Family. If you haven’t figured it out yet we are ALL about FAMILY at Show Me Decorating! We wanted to share a few of our family’s favorite summer foods along with tips to get the table set just right for your festive 4th!

Favorite Meat: Brisket

The Brisket

Ingredients:

Brisket (1/2 pound per person)

Claudes BBQ Sauce

Salt & Pepper

Onion

Beer

Foil & Large Pan

Preparation:

Trim some fat off the brisket but not all because it will help keep the juice in the meat and keep it from drying out.

Seasoning:

Claudes BBQ Sauce, Beer, Salt, Pepper and chopped onion.

Cook Prep:

Using a large pan (throw away foil pans work great) line pan with foil leaving enough to cover the top of your meat. Mix seasoning in the bottom of the pan. Lay meat fattest side up (this allows the fat to dry out not your meat) and season the top of your meat. Wrap your brisket tight in the foil. Recover the entire brisket with foil. Place in over at 300 degrees and allow to cook for up at least 5 hours.

Serving:

Trim remaining fat off brisket, cut and serve.

Favorite Sides

Potato Casserole, Fresh Salad

Kathy’s Potato Casserole

Ingredients:

10-12 golden potatoes

Real butter

Sour cream

Grated cheese

Green onions & salt

Preparation:

Wash and cut potatoes into chunks.

Cooking:

Bring potatoes to boil and allow to cook throughly, Drain potatoes, add 2 stick of butter, 16 ounces of sour cream, 1 1/2 cups of grated cheese and chopped green onions. Mix all together and place in large casserole pan. Top with additional cheese. Re-heat at 350′ for about 20-30 minutes.

Katy’s Fresh Salad

Ingredients:

Baby Spring salad mix

Red/yellow/orange pepper

Cherry tomatoes

Celery

Avocado

Lemon pepper.

Preparation:

Dice peppers, celery and avocado, slice cherry tomatoes in half.

Directions:

Using a large bowl, add salad mix, peppers, celery, avocado, tomatoes and lemon pepper. The juice from the tomatoes and flavor of the lemon pepper create enough flavor that you do not need dressing.

Favorite Desserts

Chocolate Chip Cookies, Lemonade Pie

Jennifer’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup real butter (soften)

1/2 cup Crisco

3/4 cup light brown sugar

3/4 cup Sugar

1 teaspoon Vanilla (real Mexican pure vanilla)

1 Egg

2 1/4 cup of Flour

1 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon of Baking Soda

2 cups of semi-sweet Nestle Toll House chocolate chips.

Directions:

Cream butter, Crisco and sugars together. Mix vanilla and egg well. Slowly add flour, salt and baking soda. Add chocolate chips. Drop on cookie sheet in small scoops. Bake at 35o’ until lightly golden brown.

Angela’s Lemonade Pie

Ingredients:

Graham crackers

Butter

Brown sugar

Half gallon of vanilla ice cream

Tub of cool whip

Large can of lemonade concentrate.

Directions:

Crust: Crunch 1 1/2 sleeves of graham crackers, mix one stick of melted butter and 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Combine graham crackers, butter and sugar. Pad crust into 9 x 13 pan or pie pans.

Pie: Mix ice cream, concentrate and fold in cool whip. Pour into crust and then freeze!

4th of July Table

July 4th Table

4th of July Table

Don’t forget about setting your serving table for the occasion. Just by sticking with red, white and blue and few 4th of July accent pieces you can create a simple but stylish serving area. My favorite thing was giving some height to the table with flags!

We hope that you try our families favorite summer time recipes. Please share yours with us on Facebook!

Happy 4th!
