Go Big or Go Home: Miss Cayce's Construction

Go Big or Go Home: Miss Cayce's Construction

Since we are celebrating 34 years in business this year, we thought we would flashback to the very beginning of when Miss Cayce's began.

Becky and Kathy

When we first started Miss Cayce's we had several temporary locations and storage buildings. As product came in we had to keep adding storage buildings until we leased a temporary spot in LaVallita which is now where the HEB is. After leasing temporary locations, moving in and out and in and out, we were finally able to find a permanent location. Our new home for the next 20 years was at Fairmont Shopping Center. We built out this spot, moved in and started taking deliveries. Now we could set up and focus on Christmas decorating.

Miss Cayce's Christmas Store

As the Permian basin grew so did we. We were busting at the seams so much so that we had to have containers, storage buildings and Christmas stored all over town.

We decided, along with our families, to either go big or go home. And if you know anything about Kathy and I, we always go BIG! The search for the new spot began. Mark found an old YMCA complete with Racquet ball courts, swimming pool and saunas. When we first thought about the place, it seemed impossible to make into a Christmas store, but with a little imagination and vision we were ready to take it on!

Now the fun started. The 17000 sq ft space had to be completely gutted, and the new store design plan was created. Kathy and I started dreaming, and I remember how fun it was to be able to customize the store exactly how we wanted it. We pulled inspiration from all over, Market showrooms, other stores we loved and of course Pinterest.

We love finding antiques and being able to repurpose old pieces. For example, the large checkout area was made from repurposed floor joists we found under the Racquet ball courts. We searched high and low for windows and doors, and it took one trip to Round Top to load up an entire trailer to repurpose and reuse. Tin scalloped awnings, old wood doors and ship lap walls, completed the rustic industrial look and feel.

Another idea we had was moveable walls similar to the ones we saw at Market. Every year we switch up the themes, and with moveable walls we get to create an entirely new store every year.

Some other necessities for the new store were, pallet rack shelving on wheels, slat walls, wide isle ways, a high ceiling to hang merchandise from, an entertaining kitchen to host events, offices, tree storage, design room and more! It was a big list of dreams and to dos. We wanted to embrace the idea that Miss Cayce's is your "Happy Place," so everything we created was for our customers enjoyment.

Like we said, Go Big or Go Home, and with the support of our family, friends, employees and some awesome construction workers, we were able to create the Miss Cayce's of our dreams. So thank you to everyone who supported us through this exciting journey.
